(சம உரிமை, சுய மரியாதை, பொறுப்புணர்வு...)

'ஓய்வுநாள் மனிதருக்காக உண்டாக்கப்பட்டது, மனிதர் ஓய்வுநாளுக்காக உண்டாக்கப்படவில்லை' (மாற்கு 2:27). 'கடவுள் தம் உருவில் மானிடரை படைத்தார் , கடவுளின் உருவிலேயே அவர்களை படைத்தார்; ஆணும் பெண்ணுமாக அவர்களை படைத்தார்.' (தொடக்க நூல் 1:27)

'உலகின் ஒளி  நானே...' (யோவான் 8:12) என்ற இயேசுவே 'நீங்கள் உலகிற்கு ஒளியாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்' (மத்தேயு 5:14) என்றும் கூறிச்சென்றார். நம்மை அவருக்கே ஒப்பாக்கினார் ! மட்டுமா, 'மிக சிறியோராகிய  என் சகோதர சகோதரிகளுள் ஒருவருக்கு நீங்கள் செய்த தையெல்லாம் எனக்கே செய்தீர்கள் ' (மத்தேயு 25:40, 45) எனக்கூறி சமூகம் தள்ளிவைத்தவர்களை தமக்கு ஒப்பாக்கினார் ! இதே உணர்வைத்தான், உணர்ச்சியைத்தான் அவர் தம்மை  கடவுளோடு ஒப்பிடும்போதும் பார்க்கிறோம்: '...என்னை காண்பது தந்தையை காண்பது ஆகும்.' (யோவான் 14:9) என்றும், 'நானும் தந்தையும் ஒன்றாய் இருக்கிறோம்' (யோவான் 10:30) என்றும் சாதிக்கிறார். 

இன்னும் பாருங்கள்: '...உங்கள் விண்ணக தந்தை நிறை உள்ளவராய் இருப்பதுபோல நீங்களும் நிறை உள்ளவர்களாய் இருங்கள்' (மத்தேயு 5:48) என்று சாற்றுகின்றார். மேலும் பேதுரு சொல்வதை கேட்போம்: '...நீங்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட வழிமரபினர், அரசகுருக்களின் கூட்டத்தினர், தூய மக்களினத்தினர்...' (1பேதுரு 2:9); பவுலும் இதைத்தான் '...கடவுளின் பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய பெருமையையும் விடுதலை(யை)யும்...'(உரோமையர்  8:21) என சொல்லி போகிறார்.. 

இதே மக்களைப்பற்றி மோசேயிடம் கடவுள் 'முறையிடு'வதை பார்ப்போம்: '...என் மக்கள் படும் துன்பத்தை என் கண்களால் கண்டேன்; அடிமை வேலைவாங்கும் அதிகாரிகளை முன்னிட்டு அவர்கள் எழுப்பும் குரலையும் கேட்டேன்; ஆம், அவர்களின் துயரங்களை நான் அறிவேன்... எனவே... அவர்களை விடுவிக்கவும் பாலும் தேனும் பொழியும் நல்ல பரந்ததோர் ;நாட்டிற்கு அவர்களை நடத்தி செல்லவும் இறங்கி  வந்துள்ளேன்.' (விடுதலை பயண நூல் 3:7-8). 

கடவுளுக்கே நிகரென்று கூறுமளவுக்கு படைக்கப்பட்ட, பெருமையுடைத்த மனிதனின் அவலத்தில் அக்கரையோடு  அண்டி வரும் ஆண்டவனையே விவிலியம் அறிமுகப்படுத்துகின்றது. அதையே 'கடவுளோடு கடவுளாய்...இருந்த வாக்கு...மனிதர் ஆகி...நம்மிடையே குடிகொண்ட..' (யோவான் 1:1, 14) இயேசுவாக தெரிந்துகொண்டோம்,உணர்ந்துகொண்டோம், உறவுகொண்டோம்!

நற்செய்தி முழுக்க, முழுக்க அவரது மனிதநேயமே... நமது இன்றைய அவலங்களில் கலங்கிபோகாமல், அவரைப்போல் தீர்க்கமான முடிவோடு அவற்றை நேர்கொள்ள,  முறியடித்து வெற்றி வாகை சூட, உயிர்த்தெழ போராடுவோம்,தேவைப்பட்டால் உயிரை இழக்கவும் தயாராவோம். [25.10.13தொடரும்...]

இதே உண்மையைத்தான்  இந்துமதமும் உபநிடதங்கள் வழியாக சொல்லிசெல்கின்றது: 'நீ அதுவே ... நான்  பிரம்மம்.' அரவிந்தரும் இதே கருத்தை  சொல்வதை பார்ப்போம்: 'மரணத்தோடு முடியக்கூடிய சிறுமையல்ல நாம்...' என்றெல்லாம். 

விலங்குகள்கூட உரிமை பாராட்டுவதை நாம் அறிவோம். அவைக்கென தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் இடங்களில் வேறு யாரையும் அவை  அனுமதிப்பதில்லை.  தேர்வு செய்த இணைக்காக, இரைக்காக அவை வெறியோடு போராடுவதை பார்த்திருக்கிறோம். இவை பெரும்பாலும் உடல் சார்ந்த தேவைகள். ஆனால் மனிதனுக்கு மட்டும் இதுபோக உள்ளம் சார்ந்த தேவைகளும் உண்டல்லவா. இவை அனைத்துக்கும் உத்தரவாதம் வேண்டும். அது நேற்று இன்று தொடங்கிய ஒன்றல்ல, மாறாக தொன்றுதொட்டே மானிடம் அனுபவித்துவந்த உரிமைகள் அவைகள்.

இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால், அது யாரும் தந்து நாம் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டிய ஒன்றல்ல. அது நம் பிறப்போடு வந்தது, கடவுள் தந்தது என்றுகூட சொல்லலாம். இதில் விட்டுக்கொடுக்க ஒன்றும் இல்லை. இதைத்தானோ தன்மானம் என தமிழன் சொல்லிவந்தது!

 இதை மனிதன் உணர்ந்தது அடிமை சம்பிரதாயம், இன/வகுப்பு பாகுபாடு, போர்க்கால கொடூரங்கள், அட்டூழியங்கள், வலிமை அற்றவர்களை ஓரங்கட்டுவது,  ஒதுக்கி வைப்பது போன்ற ஈன செயல்களால், இழிசெயல்களால்.

இரண்டு உலகப்போர்களும், காலனி ஆட்சி கொடுமைகளும் குறிப்பாக இவற்றை தட்டிகேட்கும் சந்தர்ப்பம் மனிதத்துக்கு தந்துசென்றது. நமது காந்தியடிகளுக்கு தென் ஆப்ரிக்காவில் நேர்ந்த கொடுமையே அவரை சுதந்திர போராட்ட வீரராக, அதிலும் அகிம்சை போராட்ட வீரராக மாற்றியது. இவையெல்லாம் சேர்ந்தே ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் அமைப்புக்கு, அதன் 'மனித உரிமை பிரகடன'த்துக்கு(1948) காரணமானது.

நமது தாய்த்திரு நாட்டில் சதி, சிறுவர் மணம்,  சாதி கொடுமைகள் என்பனவும்  மனித அபிமானத்தை உலுப்பிவிட்டது.  இவையும் உலக அரங்கில் ஏற்பட்ட தாக்கங்களும் நமது அரசியலமைப்பு சட்டத்தில் மனித உரிமைக்கு முக்கிய பங்கு அளிக்க உதவியது, குறிப்பாக, அடிப்படை உரிமைகள், இட ஒதுக்கீடு என்பவைக்கு உத்தரவாதம் தர.  இதே உணர்ச்சிகளே இந்திய நெருக்கடி நிலை பிரகடனத்தை எதிர்க்க தன்மான சிங்கங்களை தூண்டியது.

1993-ல் தேசிய மனித உரிமை கமிஷன் அமைய இவையும் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் மனித உரிமை பிரகடனம் போன்றவையும் உதவியாக இருந்தது. இந்த மனித உரிமைகளை வலுப்படுத்தும் சட்டங்களும் சட்ட திருத்தங்களும் நாளுக்கு நாள் வந்துகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன, வளர்ந்துகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன. எடுத்துக்காட்டாக: தகவல் அறியும் உரிமை சட்டம், இலவச மற்றும் கட்டாய கல்வி உரிமை சட்டம், உணவு உரிமை சட்டம் போன்றவை.

இவற்றை சாதாரண குடிமகனும் அனுபவிக்க அவன் அவற்றை தெரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும், எழுத்தறிவில்லாத அவர்களுக்கு யாரேனும் சொல்லி தெரியவைக்கவேண்டும். அப்போது மட்டுமே ஒளிமயமான ஜனநாயகம் நிஜமாகும். அல்லாதவரை லஞ்சம், ஊழல், அடாவடித்தனம்,அட்டூழியம் நிறைந்து இறையரசாக வேண்டிய நம் பூமியே நரகமாகிவிடும்.

மனித உரிமையிலிருந்து பிரித்து பார்க்கமுடியாத ஓன்று சுற்றுப்புற சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு. உயிர் வாழ மாசுபடாத வாயு, தண்ணீர் மிக அவசியம். உணவு போருட்களில்கூட விஷம்... ஆரோக்கியமான வாழ்க்கைக்கு சுற்றுப்புற சூழல் என்றையும்விட இன்று மிக அவசியம்.

மழலை சொல் கேளாதவர்.' - திருக்குறள் 

குழந்தைகள் 'நக்ஷத்திர சிதறல்கள்' என்றும் யாரோ சொல்லி கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன். மட்டுமா, 'குழந்தையும் தெய்வமும் குணத்தால் ஓன்று' என்றும் பாடக்கேட்டிருப்போமே. இவர்கள்தான் பெற்றோரின் பெருமை, மற்றோரின் மகிழ்ச்சி , குடும்பங்களின் குதூகலம்... அனால் இன்று இந்த பச்சிளம் குழந்தைகளே குற்றவாளிகளாக மாற்றப்படுகிறார்கள்... இதை விசித்திரம் என்று சொல்வதா, விதியின் விபரீதம் என்பதா? இந்த நாட்டை, ஏன் நாகரிக உலகையே நடுக்கிய டில்லி பாலியல் வன்முறை வழக்கில் தண்டிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு குழந்தையைப்பற்றியும் கேட்டு நடுங்கியவர்கல்தானே நாமெல்லாம். [இந்திய தண்டனை சட்டப்படி 18 வயது நிறைவுபெறாதவர் எல்லாம் குழந்தைகளே!] 

இந்த பின்னணியில் ஒரு பிரபல மலையாள நாளிதழ் 'மாத்றுபூமி ' 2.10.2013 முதல் 7.10.13 வரை  "'இன்னொரு குற்றம் இன்னொரு தண்டனை' எனும் தலைப்பில் ஒ .ராதிகா எழுதிய ஒரு கட்டுரைத்தொடர் பிரசித்தப்படுத்தியது. குழந்தைகளுக்கான நீதிமன்றம் 'ஜுவனைல் ஜஸ்டிஸ் போர்டு' நமது அண்டை மாவட்டமான திருவனந்தபுரத்தில் மட்டும் இந்த வருடம் 92 வழக்குகள் வந்ததாக தெரிகின்றது!

இப்படி சென்றால் நாளை எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று  நினைக்கும்போதே பயமாக இருக்கிறதல்லவா! நம் குழந்தைகளின் எதிர்காலத்தை பத்திரப்படுத்துவோம், கூடவே நமதையும் . 'பழுது பார்ப்பதைவிட படைப்பதே மேல்' என்று புரிந்துகொண்டு  அதற்க்கான அனைத்து முயற்ச்சிகளையும் செய்வோமா...

குழந்தைகளை தவறவிட்டு பின் தண்டிப்பது எவ்வளவு விசித்திரமோ, அவ்வளவு விசித்திரம் அவர்கள் தப்பான முறையில் வளர்க்கப்பட்டு பின் நேர் வழிக்கு கொண்டுவர முயற்ச்சிப்பது.  எனவே , எப்போதிலிருந்து அவர்களுக்கு 'பயிற்சி ' தேவை என்று பார்ப்போமா? 

நமது புராணங்களில் இது சம்பந்தமான ஒரு அழகு நிகழ்வு உண்டு: பாரத போரில் அர்ஜுனன் மகன் அபிமன்யு அமைத்த சக்கர வியூகத்தில் இருந்து வெளியே வரமுடியாமல் அகப்பட்டு கொண்டதுதான் இந்த நிகழ்வு. இதன் காரணம் என்னவென்றால் , அப்போரின் முன் பார்த்தசாரதி கண்ணன் பார்த்தன் /அர்ஜுனன் வீட்டுக்கு வந்து போர் தந்திரங்கள் பற்றி விவாதிக்கிறான், குறிப்பாக துரோணரின் சக்கரவியூகம்பற்றி. அவ்வேளை அபிமன்யுவை கர்ப்பத்தில் சுமந்த சுபத்ராவும் அங்கிருந்தாள் . களைப்பால் அவள் தூங்க சென்றபிறகே வியூகத்திலிருந்து வெளியேறும் தந்திரம் விவாதிக்கப்பட்டது. கர்ப்பத்திலிருந்து இதை பதிவு செய்ய முடியாமல் போனாதாலேயே அபிமன்யு வெளியேற முடியாமல் அகப்பட்டுகொண்டான்!

இதற்கும் நிகரான ஒன்று லூக்கு நற்செய்தியில் (1:44...) பார்க்கிறோம். "உம வாழ்த்துரை என் காதில் விழுந்ததும் என் வயிற்றினுள்ளே குழந்தை பேருவகையால் துள்ளிற்று' என்று எலிசபெத்து மரியாவை பார்த்து கூறுகிறாள். 

இந்த வேதாகம கூற்றுகளை இன்றைய அறிவியலும் அமோதிக்கின்றது ! இதையே 17.10.2013 அன்றைய தி ஹிந்து ஆங்கில நாளிதழ் [திருவனனதபுரம் பதிப்பு] அறிவியல் தொழில்நுட்ப பக்கத்தில் (16) டி.பாலசுப்ரமணியனின் கட்டுரையில் சுட்டி காட்டுகின்றது. 

ஏன்  இதை சொல்கிறேன் என்றால், குழந்தை வளர்ப்பு கருவிலிருந்தே தொடங்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுகொள்ளவே . குழந்தை ஒரு வயது எட்டுமுன்னே  அதன் மூளை மூன்று மடங்கு வளர்ந்துவிடுகிறது. அதற்கு தேவையான ஊட்ட சக்தி நிரம்பிய உணவுகள் மற்றும் மனதுக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சி அளிக்கும் சூழலையும் நாம் தரவேண்டும். தாயை பராமரித்தல்,அன்பு செய்து ஆதரித்தல், மகிழ்ச்சியான சூழலில் இருக்கவைத்தல் குழந்தைக்கு மிக முக்கியம்.எதிர் மறையான, முரண்பாடான சூழலில் வளரும் குழந்தைகள் பிரச்சினைக்காரர்கள் ஆவது சுலபம். இன்றைய நமது உலகு அதற்கு சாதமானதும்கூட. எனவே அனைத்து கவனமும்  அளித்து நல்லதோர் உலகுக்கு குழந்தைகளை இட்டு செல்வோம். 

பிரசவத்துக்கு பின் பள்ளிக்கூடம் போகும் வரையுள்ள காலமும் மிக கவனமாக, அக்கரையோடு பார்த்துகொள்ளவேண்டியது. கலீல் ஜிப்ரான் எனும் மேதை சொல்வதை கேளுங்கள்: 'உங்கள் குழந்தைகள் உங்கள் குழந்தைகள் அல்ல. அவர்கள் ஜீவனின் தீவிர ஆவல்கள்,ஆவேசங்கள். உங்கள் வாயிலாக வருகிறார்கள் எனினும் உங்களிலிருந்து வரவில்லை; உங்களோடு இருந்தாலும் உங்களுக்கு சொந்தமானவர்களல்ல...' அவர்கள் கடவுளின் அற்புத கொடைகள் ! அங்ஙன மே உலகமும் அவர்களை கொடையாக ஏற்றுகொள்ள செய்வோம்.

இத்தகைய பிள்ளைகளை பார்த்தல்லவா , 'மகன் தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன் தந்தை என்னோற்றான் கொல் எனும் சொல்'  என்றும், 'ஈன்ற பொழுதிற் பெரிதுவக்கும் தன மகன் சான்றோன் என கேட்ட தாய்' என்றும் பாட வள்ளுவ பெருந்தகையை  தூண்டியது. 

நமது கவியரசு கண்ணதாசன் தமது 'இயேசு காவியத்தில்' பாடுவதை பாருங்கள்: 'ஆண்டொரு பிள்ளை ஆயிரம் பெறலாம்; இயேசுவைப்போல இன்னொரு பிள்ளை ஈசனைக்கேட்டே இனிப்பெற வேண்டும்..!' நம் பிள்ளைகள் 'வீழ்ந்தால் விதையாக விழவேண்டும், எழுந்தால் கதிரவனாகவும்'! பாரதி பாடியதைப்போன்று, 'ஒளி படைத்த கண்ணினாய், உறுதிகொண்ட நெஞ்சினாய், வலிமைகொண்ட தோளினாய்' எல்லாம் வரவேண்டாமா? 

இத்தகை குழந்தைகளல்லவா  நமது நாளைய எதிர்பார்ப்புகள்... நம்பிக்கை நக்ஷத்திரங்கள்... எல்லையில்லா வானத்தை எல்லையாக்கி சாதனை புரியட்டும், சரித்திரம் படைக்கட்டும். வாழ்க மானுடம், வளர்க மனிதநேயம் !

Pope Francis interview in La Repubblica, or, “Is This Now My Fate?”

My email is filled with notes from people who need to be talked off the ledge.

The reason – this time – is Pope Francis’ interview with Eugenio Scalfari, the atheist editor of the vile Italian daily La Repubblica.

BTW… in Rome some wags are now referring to La Repubblica as L’Osservatore Romano.

I have not read the new interview in Italian yet (La Repubblica‘s site loads at tectonic plate speed), but I have read it over twice in English.

A sense of the tone of many of the Holy Father’s comments in this interview – I repeat – interview, can be gleaned from one of his observations about Augustine:

“Someone who is not touched by grace may be a person without blemish and without fear, as they say, but he will never be like a person who has touched grace. This is Augustine’s insight.”

Let that sink in for a while, keeping in mind that everything the Pope said to Scalfari is off the cuff and… well… off the cuff.

In the meantime, some of you may be having a little melt-down regarding his comments on proselytism, the Curia, conscience, etc.

The Curia…

“You know what I think about this? Heads of the Church have often been narcissists, flattered and thrilled by their courtiers. The court is the leprosy of the papacy.”

The leprosy of the papacy, those were his exact words. But what is the court? Perhaps he is alluding to the curia?

“No, there are sometimes courtiers in the curia, but the curia as a whole is another thing. It is what in an army is called the quartermaster’s office, it manages the services that serve the Holy See. But it has one defect: it is Vatican-centric. It sees and looks after the interests of the Vatican, which are still, for the most part, temporal interests. This Vatican-centric view neglects the world around us. I do not share this view and I’ll do everything I can to change it.

Of COURSE the “Vatican” is the problem! This is news?

I am reminded of candidates who make Washington the enemy.  They become President in Washington and they make Washington the enemy.  John Paul II had problems with the “Vatican”, but he became the “Vatican” eventually.  Benedict was betrayed again and again within the “Vatican”. Francis is going to have his own Sisyphus moments with the “Vatican”.  Good luck.

That said, I think the Francis has a pretty good BS detector.  He’ll need it.

Conscience…

Your Holiness you wrote that in your letter to me. The conscience is autonomous, you said, and everyone must obey his conscience. I think that’s one of the most courageous steps taken by a Pope.

“And I repeat it here. Everyone has his own idea of good and evil and must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them. That would be enough to make the world a better place.”

Is there more to say about “conscience”? You bet. Can it be said in an interview… this interview in this moment?  Nope.

But let’s see if what Francis said has foundation in what the Church teaches:

Catechism of the Catholic Church 1800: A human being must always obey the certain judgment of his conscience.

Or:

1790: A human being must always obey the certain judgment of his conscience. If he were deliberately to act against it, he would condemn himself. Yet it can happen that moral conscience remains in ignorance and makes erroneous judgments about acts to be performed or already committed.

Or:

1782: Man has the right to act in conscience and in freedom so as personally to make moral decisions. “He must not be forced to act contrary to his conscience. Nor must he be prevented from acting according to his conscience, especially in religious matters.” (Dignitatis humanae 3 § 2.)

How about:

2106 “Nobody may be forced to act against his convictions, nor is anyone to be restrained from acting in accordance with his conscience in religious matters in private or in public, alone or in association with others, within due limits.” (DH 2 § 1) This right is based on the very nature of the human person, whose dignity enables him freely to assent to the divine truth which transcends the temporal order. For this reason it “continues to exist even in those who do not live up to their obligation of seeking the truth and adhering to it.” (DH 2 § 2)

I will add believers and Catholics are obliged to follow their FORMED consciences, and those consciences are enlightened by Divine Revelation, by apostolic tradition and by the Magisterium.  Once again, His Holiness is right, but within the context that he had in mind, which context is only implicitly evident in the interview because of the nature of that genre.

Could Francis be faulted for not talking about defective conscience or lack of formation of conscience? I suppose.  But the Church teaches that people cannot be coerced in matters of conscience.  This is anatural right as well.   But the context here is non-believers.   When the LCWR nuns try to citeDignitatis humanae as an excuse to not obey, they err and err gravely.  But the Pope was talking with a non-believing journalist, not LCWR nuns.

Context, friends, context.

Sigh… are we going to have to do this everyday?  Is this now my fate?

It’s an interview, friends.

Popes don’t govern or shape doctrine in interviews.

Proselytizing…

The Pope smiles and says: “Some of my colleagues who know you told me that you will try to convert me.”

It’s a joke I tell him. My friends think it is you want to convert me.

He smiles again and replies: “Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us. Sometimes after a meeting I want to arrange another one because new ideas are born and I discover new needs. This is important: to get to know people, listen, expand the circle of ideas. The world is crisscrossed by roads that come closer together and move apart, but the important thing is that they lead towards the Good.”

When you read this, you have the sense that the Pope is really in the moment.  This is how you talk when you are involved with the emotion of the moment, with the adrenaline of the occasion.  Alas, your Earth’s yellow sun doesn’t give me the power of reading minds, but this is how it feels to me, having read that bit – aloud, though in English – and thought about it.

In any event, some quick thoughts after having read the interview:

§  abortion is still murder,

§  gay marriage is still no marriage,

§  we’re going to jaw-jaw with nonbelievers,

§  we’re still going to be a minority,

§  Former-Fr. – Mister Reynolds is still excommunicated!

Christ, the door of faith…

Homily at Nettayam on Tue, 15^th Oct ’13

Christ, the door of faith:

Faith: - i) Year of faith ii) Feast Notice iii) St. Teresa of Avila-feast- ‘…it is by this door that we must enter… the holy contemplatives like Francis, Antony of Padua, Bernard and Catherine of Siena advanced by no other way than this one.’ P.*352 of ‘The Divine Office’, Vol. III

Door: - i) (Paul and Barnabas) declared all that God had done with them, and how he opened a door of faith to the Gentiles (Acts 14:27) ii)’ …I am the door of the sheep… I am the door; if anyone enters by me, he shall be saved…’ (Jn 10:8-9) iii) Jn 14:6 ‘Jesus said to him (Thomas), “I am the way, and the truth, and the life…”

Ignatius of Antioch (Week 27, p.618) ‘faith- flesh of Christ; love- blood of Christ..’

Faith seems to be the basis of religions! Letter to the Hebrews in 11:1 says that ‘… faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.’ Yes, it seemingly is a matter beyond the grasp of our senses! It is not ‘intuition’. Usually it is demanded by an authority, for that matter religious authority which claims ‘infallibility’, or with regard to the revelations, ‘inerrancy’ and ‘inspiration.’ The so-called ‘faithful’ has no choice.

This approach doesn’t suit man who was created in the image and likeness of God. What could be the image and likeness of god other than his freedom and reasoning faculty? Other than the so-called revelation, truth could be accessed only through reasoning. It is this truth which would set us free as Jesus said. Jesus didn’t denounce Thomas when he defied believing in the risen Jesus till he saw him in person. That much freedom god’s children do have.

The ordeal of faith begins with the very first parents. They were asked ‘not to eat of the tree… in the midst of the garden… lest you die.’ In spite of resisting the delight of the tree, the woman failed before the persuasion of the ‘serpent’ which assured her that ‘you will not die… your eyes will be opened… know good and evil.’ The assurance of the serpent turned out to be real for they did not only die, but their eyes were opened and knew that they were naked!

And the punishment for this failure was certainly disproportionate and that is being inflicted on all humans to this day! Jesus is said to have atoned for all our sins, including that of the first parents! In that case, this punishment should have been lifted and there should not have been a hell! The ‘purgatory’ has already been abolished and what remains is this ‘hell.’ [Does it not imply that all these are man-made, including the gods…? The Malayalam poet Vayalar has written man has made religions which in turn have created gods. Both of them together have divided the land and our minds. Again Kunjunni has written: on the sixth day god has created man out of dust and on the seventh day, the very next day, man has made god out of rock!]

Coming to Abraham, the father of the faithful, that poor man was tested beyond his capacities and he obeyed blindly as if a mentally retarded person would do! Why should a god test or try humans like this? Are we a toy in his hands, having no feelings and other responses? Does he not respect our freedom? Has not Jesus re-written the old concepts of god? Why do we still keep him a Lord rather than a loving father, father of the prodigal son?

Jesus too had his share of these trials! He prayed that the cup should pass away from him for it was too much and bitter. His pain and anxiety was such that he sweats blood!

Why should there be evil at all, especially when there is this omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent god? Jose Saramago in his ‘The Gospel according to Jesus Christ’ depicts the temptation scene in such a way the Satan offers to resign in order to save Jesus from being sacrificed for sins, but god doesn’t accept the offer fearing that there won’t be any relevance for god himself in the absence of devil/Satan!

Faith would be meaningful in human relations rather than between god and man. To exist is to co-exist and faith becomes an imperative in this. Without faith human relations would be hell, a curse. Having faith in others and being faithful to them is what we earn for in life.  [pancretius, malamukal 5^th Oct ‘13]
