Priests and their families…

The other day happened to meet one of the seminarians expecting to be vested one of these days. He shared with me an interesting incident at home. When he informed his mother of his forthcoming vestition, she seemed to have promised him a golden ring! The poor mother was naturally influenced by many priests wearing golden chains, rings (in the pretext of Rosary) and so on. Thank God, that young seminarian could not only resist that temptation, but he could convince his mother of not following priests when they give examples of counter witnessing. In this context, I would love to emulate another example seemingly being set by a women religious congregation while preparing their nuns getting ready for their first profession. They not only thought of well in preparing the parents of the nuns to profess, but also arranged a ‘retreat’ for a few days for them. It will certainly go well with the life of the nuns for whom the moral, spiritual and other support of the family indeed is very vital. This is all the more so needed for the priests who are mostly spoiled by the parents and the relatives who expect from them unworthy favours. This starts with giving them first unnecessary conveniences and thereby creates in them lifelong liabilities/obligation. So, why don’t we too bring the parents, and if possible all the siblings too for a ‘retreat’ in which we could tell them that their son/sibling needs their moral and spiritual support all along to remain a good and committed priest to serve the Kingdom by serving the ‘poor of Yahewh.’

He has given us life, love and care...
