The AVM [Anantha Victoria Marthandam] Canal Projected was planned at the reign of Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma of erstwhile Travancore Kingdom.
This was to begin at North Parur in present day Ernakulam District and reach Mandaikkadu in present day Kanyakumari District.
The first part was implemented in 1860, then from Poovar upto Erayumanthurai was implemented in 1864 and that upto Mandaikkadu in 1867.
