To my priest colleagues…

Dear Friends,
I am proud to be a member of this great presbyterium which grew many folds (110) since my ordination in Dec 1980, though quiet many (40-45) of them are no more with us today. Rather contrary to its cherished traditions, this same presbyterium didn’t bother to know what happened to one of its members all these days (for nearly two years)!

However, considering myself as a responsible colleague, I feel obliged to tell you why I kept myself out all these days, though you may not be quite interested to know of it. I tried to live as public as possible and don't want that to be an affair between a bishop and a priest.

It rather becomes an imperative when the archbishop identifies/interchanges himself with the diocese and has a taken a stand of not minding anyone who dissents, if not rebels or agitates against matters seemingly of serious consequences to the diocese. Had enough confrontations with him in private and in the last one he dared me to challenge him in public, if I could! That was not becoming of anyone comfortably placed in a high pedestal. I can very well take up that challenge, provided he takes his position on a level ground. Why can't he have a genuine evaluation of his episcopacy?

He is no more in command, at least with regard to me. I have defied him, rather his policies enough. Why is he not initiating any disciplinary action?

He seems to act like Louis XIV who in his arrogance said ‘I am the state’ and Indira Gandhi of whom it was said, ‘Indira is India and India is Indira!’

You, my friends, stand to gain one thing or other by apparently approving everything he does or says. That may be the reason why most of us, most of the times kept quiet even in matters of serious consequences affecting the destiny of our beloved people who deserve much more than what is thrown to them.

As for me, I have opted out, when I was denied of a basic information as a responsible charge of a ministry.  This was in the background of two of our schools, the only ones in the entire district, to get disqualified for not providing the basic amenities as directed by the honourable High Court of Kerala.

Of late we learn with alarm, shock and surprise, how the very lieutenants whom the CM trusted betrayed/cheated him and ultimately the state and its peoples! If so, how much more will it be in our situations, especially in the fiscal matters. Transparency and accountability should be the hallmark of any genuine administration, even that of the church for that matter. But he wants us to believe him and his lieutenants! It is not enough to be just and truthful but one should look to be so.

Even in the liturgy, he is arbitrary and autocratic to the extent of giving scandal. How can a bishop let the Mass be put on hold/stopped/paused for a considerable time for him to come and bless a marriage? Can’t he come little early and attend the Mass of the edification of the faithful? Or let him preside over the Eucharist and bless the marriage. How can one justify posing for photos intra Missa? Has he ever let a priest preach and listened to him? Is it only a bishop’s prerogative to preach? ‘Brevity is the soul of wisdom.’ What a lengthy sermon he preaches, without any regard for precious time! His disregard for punctuality speaks volumes!

He seemingly is no more in command of things!

After almost two years, I am here amongst you, my fellow priests, though, none of you seemingly hasn’t bothered to know what happened to me all these days! [However, wishing to be a responsible colleague, would like that you be told of the reasons why I stayed out with enough pain.]

This diocese of ours gave me the ‘community’ identity, of which I am proud of. And this great community is still said to be ‘backward’, a constant refrain by the authorities, in spite of the developments our valiant people carved out of their sheer determination and hard work giving no credit to anyone.

One of my friends the other day (3.7.13) persuaded me not to confront the so called ‘authority’, but tactfully move to empower the people ultimately. This needs to be heeded to. Let me try.

Universalism of gods...!

Attributes of gods are all pervading, all knowing and almighty! But no god so far has had any universal 'jurisdiction, in spite of the wars they have made men to wage one against the other! Aren't they like any other kings competing for supremacy and sovereignty?

No gods ever seem to be managing even their own affairs without human assistance! They in fact manipulate gods to suit their conveniences! "Manushyan mathangale shrusticchu; mathangal deivangale shrusticchu; manushyanum, mathagalum deivangalum koodi, mannu panku vacchu, manasu pankuvacchu.' 'Antha naal muthal intha naall vare.... [ feeling eyes to be heavy... sleepy... continue conveniently...]

Unto dust thou shalt return...!

This is what was said while smearing the ash on the foreheads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday to commence the Lenten season to prepare for the forthcoming Holy Week! Now a days, though an alternate formula, 'repent and believe in the gospel', is given,  the one given as title is usually preferred.

Now let us reflect on it: The text from Genesis 3:19b says: '... you are dust, and to dust you shall return.' But John commences his gospel stating that 'In the beginning was the Word....And the Word became flesh...' Word need not necessarily mean always spoken word. It could also mean volition. Every human act has its own volition, all the more so the sexual acts, the basic instinct, without which no birth is possible, other than the 'virgin birth'!

Word takes flesh to incarnate. It is this flesh that is said to be the dust and unto dust everyone should return. Dust is earth/ ground and so on. It is on this earth we all, along with every living and non-living organisms, subsist.

Then what exactly becomes dust, the word or the flesh? [Needs to be developed...]

Vox Populi vox Dei!

[A letter intended for the archbishop, but not going to send and he is used to not responding to any such, a good for nothing attitude! 15th Feb ‘13]

Church claims to be a theocracy wherein the ‘authority’ don’t seemingly mind the people! But they conveniently forget the scriptural exhortation to no less a person than Samuel: “…hearken to their voice’! It is always better to consider a wider view than one person’s decision, however wise he was. (I Sam 8:1-9)

Yesterday’s (Friday, February 15, 2013) Hindu, in its OP-ED page brought an article on Rahul Gandhi’s projection to be the Prime Minister of India sooner than later by Vivek Katju. Some pertinent point for pondering for any ‘ruler’ was there and am taking the freedom to quote it in the church context. “…It is of utmost importance for a leader to keep his ears open at all times to the ‘voice of the people’ and to ensure that it reaches him without the filter of those who surround him. However, it is equally important for him to sense what they hold in their hearts and do not articulate out of fear of authority. Such fear is not confined to dictatorships and despotic regimes. It exists in democratic (here theocratic) systems too. Nowhere is this fear more evident than in the hesitation to openly speak on matters concerning the actual or perceived wrongdoing by the members of a leader’s family (team). …How he deals with them would be the … test of leadership, for it would set its moral tone and test how much one values probity in public life.

… in the absence of competent and honest regulatory mechanisms, economic (for that matter any growth) has been accompanied by extraordinary corruption in the area of the country’s (church’s) natural resources, especially land.

…It would be terribly misleading to think that the people overlook these issues and do not care. They watch the wrongdoings with a sense of hurt and despair at the injustice of it all. When they see growing disparities, their feelings turn to anger which occasionally manifests itself on the streets or in elections.”

Playing to the gallery...

Though a lawyer technically, am only an apprentice at the  legal profession. With the immaturity common to any apprentice, am attempting to comment on the recent developments originating from the gang rape of a 23 year old girl in a running bus in the national capital. Quite naturally, there was a hue and cry for the blood of the perpetrators of that heinous crime! But mind you, they too were a product of the society you and i belong to and we can't evade or escape our responsibility over that.

There is enough of hypocracy in the matter of sex all along. As a quote published in the Malayalam daily, 'Mathrubhumi' which roughly translated would be 'we are what we hide rather what we claim!' If left alone in a similar situation, how many of us would treat a girl as our own sister? Why speak of sister and brother, when one's own father rapes his daughter! We may rush to add that such ones are perverse and need to be treated. However, i would like to differ as i am almost sure that most of us behave unbecomingly towards  women.

I would even dare to raise a deeper question which may send shock waves all over and all along. Even in an unavoidable situation, how many of us would share a bed with his/her daughter/son come of age? I don't think that any of us would do that. That is more than evident that what matters is man and women and sex, the basic instinct, if not the base instinct. The morality, especially the hypocritical morality around it has taken it to this levels. Let us try to be honest with this basic instinct. Let us try to re-interpret and redefine the religious attitudes towards it, if needed.

One of the powerful stories in this aspect is that of Vishwamitran and Menaka. The former, determined as he was, to overcome the famine, was engaged in 'tapas' which the 'devas' were bent upon disturbing. They unleashed all the elements and his determination saw him overcome all. As a last resort they tried  a celestial damsel, Maneka to 'distract' him from within and that was more than successful! Though a story, it speaks volumes on our nature.

Altamas Kabir, the Chief Justice of India, has said: "A swift trial should not be at the cost of a fair trial', in response to the people's demand for convicting the accused at once! Again, he said rightly that 'It is not a crime against the body but it is also a crime against the soul.' While it is not my intention to defend the accused in any way, i would rush to add that the other party should certainly be heard and the procedure of law should thoroughly be followed to ensure that in haste we don't convict an innocent, or the accused is entitled for the benefit of doubt in his favor.

Now, something by way of caution: i) Media hype should never be allowed to prejudice the bench or anyone involved in the trial of the case. Prosecution should establish the guilt beyond all reasonable doubts and ensure that an innocent is not punished at all. ii) Open court trial could be influenced by the gallery, especially when the case  is tried in the local courts and when the case is sensitive one. iii) The judicial officers may not resist the temptation of playing to the gallery. iv) In order to avoid such situation, the trial could be held in a court sufficiently away from the interested crowds ensuring free and fair trial devoid of any pressure or any kind of bias. v) In sensitive cases the defense counsel will be under tremendous pressure to go with the  media opinion and popular opinion.vi) The visual media should restrict/refrain itself from creating biased stands in the pretext of panel discussions of the 'experts' etc!
